Why you need an Air Filter

Your air filter is one of the most important parts of your air conditioning system and often one of the most neglected. This device helps remove the solid particulates such as pollen, mold, dust and bacteria from the air. The removal of these particulates is extremely important to the working mechanics of your air conditioning system. Higher quality filters remove more particulates and are designed to improve the quality of the air we breathe.

Filter Use

The use of a good filter or cleaner immediately affects indoor air quality. Neglecting this air cleaner can easily result in a mold or mildew infestation of your equipment or ducting. Regular servicing of the filters and equipment is essential. Most of the in-duct units made for air conditioning are made of loosely spun fiber glass or cotton.

Characteristic of the fiber glass air filters

Fiberglass and cotton filters are inexpensive and are easily replaced but are not very efficient in removing particulates from the air, especially if your goal is to improve indoor air quality. These filters are usually disposable and they come in various sizes and densities. Less dense filters provide for a very high air flow volume but do not remove as many particles from the air. Air filters with a higher density remove more particles and are therefore more efficient. But these dense filters can significantly reduce the airflow and therefore have negative impact on the cooling capacity of the system. Since the higher density filters trap more particulates from the air they almost always require more maintenance then a standard filter.

Other materials used

Polyester is also used to make air filters for air conditioners. Polyester and fiberglass have common characteristics and have a very high temperature rating. This rating is usually at least 248 degrees Fahrenheit and is widely used in residential, commercial and industrial applications. These polyester and glass fibers can actually be blended with cotton and other fibers to produce a wider range of performances.

It is a good idea to invest in a good air filter at the very beginning and maintain it through the life of your air conditioning system. A properly maintained, high quality filter will add years to your equipment life and may add a few years to your life as well.
